“Art is not what you see, but what you make others see” Edgar Degas
Hi, I’m Liz and I am an illustrator and mixed media artist. My studio is located within a Victorian Cotton Mill in Mossley, Saddleworth, UK surrounded by stunning landscape! I initially trained as a research scientist then retrained in the arts as a landscape architect. These experiences undoubtedly influence my painting approaches. Place and my feelings towards places, are really strong influences in my art.
My illustrations tell stories about Places and occasions. I am commissioned by private and commercial clients to capture historic buildings, private homes, special places, festivals, weddings, everyday life and more. I combine drawing, painting and text to produce my documentary illustrations. These are usually created on location, with pen, ink, watercolour and other media.
In my paintings, I aim to express my experiences of places and what they mean to me. Historic and industrial places as well as landscapes, are key sources of inspiration. I try to convey aspects of the overall as well as the specific materiality of those places, their textures, and narrative. Through building up multiple layers of collage and paint, I aim to convey aspects of time and environment in my paintings.
“To paint not the thing but the effect it produces” Stephane Mallarme
I lead drawing and mixed media workshops from my studio at Woodend Mill and other venues
